Phase 4: Maturation Phase (Remodelling).
The Maturation Stage results in the following taking place:
- New tissue develops and increases in strength and flexibility.
- Collagen fibres reorganise and remodelling, and maturity takes place.
- Tensile strength improves but is lower than before the injury occurred (usually only 80% of its former strength)
Although this is a remarkable process it does have limitations usually impacted by external factors (systemic) these can be related to other infections, age, nutrition, body type, maceration, and moisture. The process can take from 21 days and extending to 2 years. If all the right conditions exist and are in place the healing process is more effective and speedier!
