INTRODUCTION TO ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

Position and Actions of Muscles – Leg and Foot

Position and actions of the lower leg and foot muscles.

Muscle name

location

action

Tibias anterior

Anterior aspect of the lower leg

Dorsi flexes and inverts the foot

Peroneus longus

Lateral aspect of the lower leg

Plantar flexes the feet

Extensor digitorum longus

Lateral side of the front of the lower leg

Extends the second to fifth toes and dorsi flexes and eversion of the foot

Extensor digitorum tendons

tops of the toes

Straightens the toes

gastrocnemius

A calf muscle which inserts through the Achilles tendon into the heel

Plantar flexes the foot

soleus

Below the gastrocnemius and inserts through the Achilles tendon into the heel

Plantar flexes the foot

Achilles tendon

Attached to the soleus and gastrocnemius down to the heel

Raises the foot

Flexor digitorum tendons

Underneath the toes

Bends the toes

Flexor hallucis longus

From the distal two thirds of the posterior fibula to the plantar surface of the big toe

Flexion of the big toe, plantar flexion, and inversion of the foot.

Position and actions of the upper leg muscles (anterior and posterior)

Muscle name

location

action

Quadriceps extensor (quads)

four muscles on the anterior side of the thigh

Extends the knee and flexes the hip

sartorius

Crosses the anterior side of the thigh from the ilium to the tibia

Flexes the knee and hip, and rotates the thigh outwards

Adductors of the hip

These are four muscles on the medial aspect of the thigh

Adduct and laterally rotates the thigh and flexes the hip

gracillis

Down the anterior medial side of the thigh from the pubic bone to the tibia

Adducts the thigh, flexes the knee, and rotates the hip

hamstrings

Three muscles on the back of the thigh

Flexes the knee and extends the hip

Tensor fascia lata

Down the side of the thigh from the ilium to the tibia

Abducts and flexes the thigh at the hip.
